Autumn is a practical time to clear a garden before winter weather sets in. You might be removing soil for new beds, lifting an old patio or preparing ground for a new driveway. The work can leave a heavy pile that is difficult to shift by hand.
For a sizeable pile of suitable material, a grab lorry can collect it in one agreed visit. The crane does the loading, so you do not need to shovel the material into a skip or leave a skip taking up space on your driveway.
One visit may be enough for a prepared garden dig-out. It depends on the material, the amount, access and the lorry’s safe capacity.
What can a grab lorry take from a garden?
Grab Hire Scotland’s standard collection is for suitable inert material, including:
Soil and topsoil
Gravel and stone
Bricks and concrete
Rubble from patios, paths and other small landscaping works
Tell us what the material is and where it came from. If it is mixed with other waste, we need to know before we confirm the collection.
The standard service does not include general rubbish, mixed waste, plasterboard, plastic or wood. Leaves, branches and hedge cuttings are green waste rather than inert material, so do not add them to a soil or rubble pile. If you are unsure about a material, describe it when you request a quote.

One prepared pile, loaded by crane
A grab lorry works best when the material is ready to collect and gathered into an accessible pile. On arrival, the operator positions the vehicle and uses its crane to lift accepted material into the lorry body. You do not have to fill a skip by hand.
The crane loads the pile; it does not dig up the garden or move material from around the site. You, your landscaper or your contractor must carry out the excavation and bring the accepted material within safe reach.
A single collection can help clear a garden dig-out without a skip sitting on the drive between loading and collection. But the pile needs to be large enough for a full-load booking, and the final amount collected depends on its weight, volume and material.
How much can one load take?
A grab lorry can carry up to 16 tonnes per full load. That is the maximum capacity, not a promise that every load will contain 16 tonnes. Dense or wet material can reach the safe weight limit before the lorry body is full.
Soil is especially heavy when saturated. Autumn rain can also make access routes soft, so consider where the lorry will stand and whether the ground can support it.
Grab-hire collections are booked as full loads; there is no half-load rate. If you are uncertain about the quantity, send a description and photos with your enquiry. We can discuss whether one load is likely to suit the job before a booking is agreed.
Check the lorry’s access and working space
A garden pile may be close to the road but still difficult to reach safely. The lorry needs a suitable place to stand, room to deploy its stabilisers and a clear working area for the crane. Trees, overhead cables, parked cars, narrow entrances, slopes and soft ground can affect whether the collection is possible.
The vehicle is approximately 9.5 metres long and 2.6 metres wide. Its height is about 3.7 metres when empty and can reach around 4.9 metres when fully loaded. Check the route and overhead clearance, and tell us about any restrictions. Photos and measurements help us assess the actual site; the driver makes the final safety decision.
A clear pile. A safe standing position. A collection that can be planned properly.

Grab lorry or skip?
A skip can suit a project where waste builds up gradually over several days, or where the material includes waste that a grab lorry cannot accept. A grab lorry is often a practical option when you have a sizeable, prepared pile of suitable soil, stone, bricks, concrete or rubble.
With a skip, you load the container yourself or arrange for someone to do it. With grab hire, the operator uses the crane to load the accepted pile, and the lorry takes it away in the agreed visit. There is no skip left occupying your driveway afterwards.
The right choice depends on the material and how the work will happen. See our grab hire and skip comparison or tell us about your garden and we can help you work out which option is suitable.
What does grab hire cost?
Grab hire prices start at £220 + VAT for a typical load. The price can only be higher than this starting point, depending on factors such as location, access and disposal requirements.
You can get a free estimate in seconds on our website. An online estimate is a useful starting point, not a confirmed booking. We check the material, postcode, access and timing before confirming the price and arrangement.
Grab Hire Scotland serves customers across Glasgow, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Falkirk and West Lothian. You can check your area through our locations directory, including our Glasgow service page.
Could you bring in aggregate as well?
If your garden project involves removing soil and bringing in new material, ask about arranging both on the same agreed visit. This may help coordinate the work and avoid arranging separate transport, where the quantities, vehicle capacity and access make it suitable.
Aggregate delivery has a minimum order of 5 tonnes. Tell us which material you need, how much you need and what accepted material is to be collected. We will confirm whether both parts can be arranged together. Read more about aggregate delivery and soil collection.

How to prepare for collection
A few details help us check the job and avoid surprises on the day:
Gather the accepted material. Keep soil, stone and rubble together where possible. Separate out wood, plastic, plasterboard and general waste.
Describe the pile. Tell us what it contains, where it came from and roughly how much there is. Photos can help.
Check the route and working area. Look for narrow access, overhead obstructions, soft ground, parked vehicles and other restrictions.
Send the postcode and preferred timing. We will check location, suitability, access and availability.
Wait for confirmation. An estimate or enquiry is not a confirmed booking. We confirm the agreed service, price and timing before the visit.

Frequently asked questions
Can one grab lorry trip clear my whole garden?
It may, if the garden work produces a suitable quantity of accepted inert material and it can be safely reached by the crane. A full load can carry up to 16 tonnes, but actual capacity depends on the material and safe loading limits. Tell us what you expect to remove so we can discuss the likely requirements.
Do I need to load the lorry myself?
No. The operator loads the accepted material with the crane. You do need to prepare and gather the pile within safe reach. Excavation and moving loose material around the garden are not included.
Can I include branches, leaves or old fencing?
Not in the standard inert collection. Branches and leaves are green waste, while fencing is usually wood. Keep these separate and tell us what you need removed before arranging a collection.
Can the grab lorry reach over a wall or fence?
Possibly, depending on the site. The crane needs a safe operating position and a clear route to the pile. Send photos and measurements so we can assess access before confirming.
How do I get an estimate?
Use the online quote form for a free estimate in seconds. Include your postcode, the material, approximate amount, access details and preferred timing. We will check the requirements before a booking is agreed.
Planning an autumn garden clear-out? Tell us what you are removing and where the lorry would need to work. We will help you check whether one grab-lorry visit is suitable.
