If you are digging out a garden, preparing a driveway, removing old foundations or clearing a construction site, you may have more soil and rubble than is practical to move by hand.
This is where muck away can help.
Muck away is the collection and disposal of excavated, inert material using a grab lorry or tipper vehicle. The lorry arrives at your site, uses its crane to load the material and takes it to an authorised disposal site. You do not need to fill a skip by hand, and the skip does not need to remain on your driveway or road.
At Grab Hire Scotland, our standard muck away service covers suitable:
Soil, topsoil and subsoil
Gravel and stone
Bricks
Concrete
Rubble and other suitable inert material
It does not cover household rubbish, mixed general waste, plasterboard, plastic, timber, hazardous or contaminated material, asbestos, chemicals, oils, liquids or gas cylinders. Tell us what the material contains before a booking is agreed so we can confirm whether the collection is suitable.

How muck away works
The process is straightforward. You identify the material and access, we check the details, and the grab lorry removes the agreed load.
A grab lorry can carry up to 16 tonnes per full load, subject to the material’s density, the volume, vehicle limits and safe loading. A full load does not always weigh 16 tonnes. Soil, wet material, concrete and dense rubble can reach the safe weight limit before the body is visibly full.
Collections are priced by the full load, not by the tonne or half load.
The crane does the loading from a safe standing position. This can reduce manual handling and may allow the lorry to collect material from a pile within reach of the crane. The driver must make the final safety decision once they assess the vehicle position, ground and working area.
5 steps to arrange a muck away collection
1. Identify the material
Start by separating the material you want removed from anything that must not go into an inert collection.
Muck away is suitable for soil, topsoil, subsoil, gravel, stone, bricks, concrete and rubble. It is not suitable for mixed household waste or materials such as plasterboard, plastic, timber, asbestos, chemicals, oils, liquids or gas cylinders.
If the material has come from a renovation, excavation or demolition job, tell us what was removed and whether anything else has been mixed into it. This helps us check the disposal requirements before the vehicle is booked.
Do not assume that a small amount of unwanted general waste can be included with soil or rubble. If you are unsure, send a description or photographs with your enquiry.
2. Estimate the amount
Next, work out roughly how much material needs to leave the site.
You do not need a laboratory measurement or a perfect calculation. A rough volume, the number of excavated areas or the expected number of loads will help us understand the job. For larger projects, your contractor or groundworker may already have an estimate.
Remember that the usable capacity depends on more than the size of the lorry:
Dense material can reach the weight limit quickly.
Wet soil may weigh more than dry soil.
Large pieces of concrete or stone may affect how the body can be loaded.
The driver must load safely and within the vehicle limits.
We will discuss the likely number of full loads with you. The estimate is not a booking until the material, access, price and timing have been checked and agreed.
3. Check the lorry access
A grab lorry needs a suitable place to stand and enough room for the crane to reach the material. The ground must be firm enough for the vehicle, and the working area must be clear of hazards.
Our lorries are approximately:
9.5 metres long
2.6 metres wide
12 feet high when empty
Up to 16 feet high when fully loaded
Before requesting a quote, check the approach to the property and the intended standing position. Consider narrow entrances, parked vehicles, slopes, soft ground, low branches, overhead cables, drains, restricted roads and nearby walls or fencing.
The lorry may be able to stand on the road while the crane reaches the pile, but this depends on the layout and the safe reach available. Send photographs, measurements and the postcode where possible. These details help us assess the actual access rather than relying on a general description.

4. Request an estimate and confirm the arrangement
Once you have the material, quantity and access information, request an estimate through the Grab Hire Scotland quote page.
Free estimates are available in seconds through the website. Quote requests are usually answered within one hour during business hours. Same-day or next-day availability may be possible, subject to location, access, vehicle availability, disposal requirements and the agreed booking details.
Prices for a typical load start at £220 + VAT. This is a starting price, not a fixed price list or a quote. The price can only be higher based on factors such as location, access, disposal and booking requirements.
We confirm the practical details before the collection is agreed. This includes:
The postcode and site location
The material to be collected
The number of full loads required
Access and safe vehicle positioning
The collection date or time slot
The agreed price and any additional requirements
This check protects the schedule and helps avoid a vehicle arriving for material or access that is not suitable.
5. Prepare the site for collection
Have the accepted material in a clear pile before the lorry arrives. Keep it separate from general waste and remove items that cannot be collected.
Make sure the route to the pile is clear. Move cars, equipment and loose items that could obstruct the lorry or crane. If the driver needs to use a shared access or road, make any necessary arrangements with neighbours or site managers.
The operator will position the lorry, inspect the working area and load the material using the grab crane. The load is then taken to an authorised disposal site. Grab Hire Scotland is a SEPA-registered waste carrier.
A clear pile. A prepared access. A simpler collection.
Muck away or skip hire?
Both options can be useful. The right choice depends on the material, volume, access and how quickly the waste needs to leave.
Muck away or grab lorry hire usually works well when:
You have a large amount of soil, gravel, concrete or rubble.
The material is being produced during excavation or site clearance.
You want the lorry to load the material rather than fill a skip manually.
You do not want a skip taking up space for several days.
The site has suitable access for a large lorry.
You need the material removed in one or more planned visits.
Skip hire may work better when:
You are producing waste gradually over several days.
The waste is mixed and includes household rubbish, timber, plastic or plasterboard.
You have limited access for a grab lorry but have somewhere suitable for a skip.
The project is a small clear-out rather than a bulk excavation.
A skip gives you a container to fill over time. Muck away gives you a planned collection of suitable inert material, with the crane carrying out the loading. If your waste includes several different material types, describe it before choosing a service.
You can also read our grab hire service information before sending your details.
Combine soil collection with aggregate delivery
Some projects need material taken away and new material brought in. For example, you may need to remove excavated soil before receiving Type 1 for a driveway, pipe bedding for utility work or ballast for a construction area.
Where suitable, we can coordinate an aggregate delivery and soil collection on the same agreed visit. This can avoid an additional aggregate transport charge when the delivery fits the agreed collection visit, subject to capacity and access.
The materials and collection are still charged separately. Any extra journeys or additional deliveries are quoted separately.
Aggregate delivery has a minimum order of 5 tonnes. Available materials include:
Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3
Whin dust
Sands
Pipe bedding
6 mm WP grit
Ballast
Tell us the material, quantity, postcode and what needs to be removed. We will check whether the delivery and collection can be carried out together. This is useful for driveway work, landscaping, groundworks, utilities and construction projects where the site needs to change from excavation to preparation.

Muck away FAQs
What does muck away mean?
Muck away means removing excavated soil, rubble and other suitable inert material from a site. It is usually carried out with a grab lorry rather than a skip.
Can a grab lorry collect household rubbish?
No. The standard service is for inert material such as soil, stone, bricks, concrete and rubble. It does not include household rubbish, mixed general waste, plasterboard, plastic, timber, asbestos, chemicals, oils, liquids or gas cylinders.
How much can a grab lorry carry?
A grab lorry can carry up to 16 tonnes per full load, subject to material density, volume, vehicle limits and safe loading. Collections are priced by the full load, not by the tonne or half load.
How much does muck away cost?
Prices start at £220 + VAT for a typical load. Prices can only be higher depending on location, access, disposal and booking requirements. This is a starting point, not a fixed price or a quote.
Can the crane load from behind a wall or fence?
It may be possible if the lorry can stand safely and the pile is within the crane’s working reach. Access, overhead obstructions, ground conditions and nearby structures must be checked first.
Can I arrange aggregate delivery and soil collection together?
Yes, where the quantities, vehicle capacity and access allow it. There is no additional aggregate transport charge when the delivery fits the same agreed collection visit. Material and collection charges still apply, and extra journeys are charged separately.
How do I request a quote?
Send the postcode, material type, estimated quantity and access details through the online quote form. You can also call 07495 814889.
Request a muck away estimate
Tell us what you are removing, where the material is located and how a grab lorry can access the site. We will check the material, access, capacity and timing before confirming the arrangement.
