Site clearance can leave you with more material than expected. A garden dig-out, driveway replacement, extension or construction project may produce piles of soil, topsoil, gravel, bricks, concrete and rubble.
Moving these materials by hand is slow. Hiring several skips can take up space and may require repeated loading. Grab lorry hire offers a practical alternative: the lorry arrives with a built-in crane, loads the prepared material and removes it from site.
Grab Hire Scotland provides site clearance and muck away services for homeowners, contractors, groundworkers and construction teams across Glasgow and Central Scotland.
What a grab lorry can remove
Our standard grab hire service is intended for suitable inert materials. These are common materials from excavation, demolition, landscaping and groundworks that do not contain hazardous or mixed general waste.
A grab lorry can usually collect:
Excavated soil
Topsoil
Gravel and stone
Bricks
Concrete
Rubble
Hardcore and similar inert material, subject to confirmation
Tell us where the material came from and what it contains when you request a price. This allows us to check whether the material is suitable for collection and inert waste disposal.
Materials such as general rubbish, plasterboard, plastic, timber, asbestos, chemicals, oils, liquids or contaminated waste are not included in the standard service. If you are unsure about any part of the pile, tell us before booking.

How the crane loading works
The material should be placed in a pile that the crane can reach safely. The operator positions the lorry, extends the crane and uses the grab to lift the soil, rubble or other accepted material into the body of the vehicle.
This means you do not need to fill a skip by hand or load a tipper using wheelbarrows. It also means the material needs to be ready and accessible when the lorry arrives. Excavation and manual preparation are not included in standard grab hire.
A clear pile. A simpler collection.
The service is useful where you want the site cleared during the working day rather than leaving a skip on a driveway or road for several days. Once the accepted material has been loaded, it is taken to authorised disposal sites.
Up to 16 tonnes per full load
A grab lorry can carry up to 16 tonnes per full load, subject to the material, its density, the available space and the vehicle’s legal loading limit.
The stated capacity does not mean every material will reach 16 tonnes. Dense concrete and wet soil may reach the safe weight limit before the body is visibly full. The driver makes the final decision about safe and lawful loading.
Grab hire is priced by full load. There is no half-load rate, so it is helpful to estimate the amount of material before you enquire. If your project will produce several loads, tell us the expected volume and timing so we can discuss the most suitable arrangement.
Vehicle access and lorry dimensions
Access should be checked before you arrange site clearance. The lorry needs a suitable place to stop, stable ground and enough room for the crane to operate.
As a guide, the grab lorry is approximately:
9.5 metres long
2.6 metres wide
Around 3.66 metres high when empty
Up to approximately 4.88 metres high when fully loaded
Actual clearance can vary depending on the vehicle, the position of the body and the material being carried.
Check the approach to your site, not just the entrance. Consider:
Narrow lanes and gateways
Parked cars
Slopes and soft ground
Overhead cables and tree branches
Drains, paving and other vulnerable surfaces
Weight restrictions
Whether the crane can reach the material from a safe standing position
For urban site clearance in Glasgow, street parking and restricted roads may also affect the arrangement. Send photographs, measurements and the full postcode where possible. The driver makes the final safety decision on arrival.

Site clearance for domestic projects
Homeowners and DIY customers often use grab hire for projects that create bulky inert waste in a short period.
Typical examples include:
Garden excavations
Driveway preparation
Patio and landscaping work
Foundation digging
Garage or extension projects
Removal of old concrete, bricks or hardcore
The crane can load a prepared pile without leaving a skip in place. This can help where driveway space is limited or where you want the material removed soon after excavation.
If you are planning the work yourself, include the type of material, the estimated number of loads and where the pile will be placed. We can discuss the practical requirements before a booking is agreed.
See our guidance for homeowners and DIY projects.
Site clearance for contractors and groundworkers
Contractors, groundworkers and construction teams may need regular muck away during excavation, foundations, utilities work or site preparation.
Grab hire can support:
Bulk removal of excavated soil
Clearance of broken concrete and bricks
Ground reduction and foundation work
Driveway and hardstanding preparation
Utility and infrastructure projects
Housebuilding and commercial construction
For planned work, you can also consider trade day hire, where a grab lorry and operator are assigned to your site for agreed day rates or line work.
The right arrangement depends on your programme, access and the amount of material produced. Give us the site postcode, material description, estimated quantity and preferred working dates. We will check availability and explain the next step.

Areas covered across Central Scotland
We provide grab hire and site clearance across:
Glasgow
Ayrshire
Lanarkshire

You can also visit our Glasgow grab hire page or Central Scotland service area.
Same-day or next-day availability may be possible, subject to location, access and the booking schedule. If you need the lorry soon, tell us your preferred date when you enquire. We will confirm whether the requested timing is available rather than treating an enquiry as a confirmed booking.
Site clearance prices
Prices start at £220 + VAT for a typical full load.
This is a starting price only. The price can only increase from that floor depending on factors such as:
Location
Site access
Material type
Disposal requirements
Number of loads
Timing and scheduling
A free estimate is available in seconds through the website quote form. We usually respond to quotation requests within one hour during business hours, Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm.
An estimate is not a confirmed booking. We confirm the material, access, price and timing before the work is agreed.
Combine material delivery with soil collection
If your project needs new aggregate after the site has been cleared, we may be able to coordinate delivery and collection on the same visit.
For example, we can discuss:
Removing excavated soil.
Delivering Type 1 or another suitable aggregate.
Completing both parts of the work during one agreed visit.
Aggregate orders start at 5 tonnes. There is no additional aggregate transport charge where the delivery fits the agreed collection visit, subject to capacity, access and the quantities involved. The aggregate and collection charges still apply, and extra journeys require a separate agreed price.

How to arrange grab hire for site clearance
The process is straightforward:
1. Send the project details
Include:
Your site postcode
The material to be removed
An approximate quantity or number of loads
Where the material will be placed
Access information and photographs
Your preferred date
2. We check the requirements
We confirm whether the material is suitable, whether the lorry can access the site and whether the requested timing is available. We also check whether one visit can cover both collection and aggregate delivery where relevant.
3. We agree the arrangement
The booking is confirmed once the price, material, access and timing have been discussed and agreed. Make sure the pile is ready and the standing area is clear for the agreed arrival window.
4. The lorry loads and removes the material
The operator uses the crane to load the accepted material. The load is then taken to an authorised disposal site.
Frequently asked questions
Is grab hire suitable for all site clearance waste?
No. Grab hire is generally suitable for accepted inert materials such as soil, topsoil, gravel, bricks, concrete and rubble. General rubbish, mixed waste, hazardous materials and contaminated waste require separate discussion.
How much can a grab lorry take?
A full load can carry up to 16 tonnes, subject to material density, vehicle limits and safe loading. The driver decides when the lawful load limit has been reached.
Is grab hire cheaper than skips?
It may be, particularly for a large accessible pile of inert material. The complete price depends on the location, access, material, disposal and number of loads. A smaller quantity or mixed waste may be better suited to another option.
Can the lorry collect from a driveway?
Possibly, subject to safe access, ground conditions, overhead clearance and enough room for the crane. Check the dimensions and send photographs before booking.
How quickly can a lorry attend?
Same-day or next-day availability may be possible, subject to location, access and the booking schedule. We will confirm the date and arrival window before the booking is agreed.
