For a planned collection, per-load hire may be the simplest option: the lorry arrives, loads the agreed material and leaves. But when the site needs repeated movements, changing loading points or a lorry working alongside the crew, a dedicated booking may suit the programme better.
Grab Hire Scotland provides a grab lorry and experienced operator for trade day hire and line work, by arrangement. The right choice depends on the work planned, access, travel and how often the vehicle needs to move. A day booking is not automatically cheaper than per-load hire, and it does not mean unlimited journeys or material.
What day hire includes
Trade day hire assigns a grab lorry and operator to your planned site work. The agreed arrangement sets out the operating period, duties, locations and movements. Line work can also be discussed where the lorry needs to support work progressing along a route or between work areas.
The crane does the loading. There is no manual skip loading, and you do not need to organise skips for the agreed material. The lorry can load suitable material directly from an accessible stockpile or work area, subject to safe access and the confirmed scope.
Day hire is best understood as planned availability for agreed work, not a set number of tonnes per day. A grab lorry can carry up to 16 tonnes per full load, but that is a maximum, not a guaranteed usable payload. Material density, volume and safe vehicle limits affect each load.

When a dedicated lorry can make sense
Repeated movements around a live site
If excavation is generating material continuously, waiting for a separate collection after each pile is ready can interrupt the work sequence. A dedicated lorry may be a better fit when the loading point keeps changing or the crew expects several movements as work progresses.
For example, a digger may be excavating while the grab lorry clears material from successive areas. Whether this arrangement is practical depends on the site layout, safe vehicle positioning and the agreed operating period.

Line work and multiple work areas
Utility work, trenching, road works and larger developments may move along a line rather than produce one fixed collection point. A dedicated vehicle can support a planned sequence of loading locations, subject to the agreed route, access and disposal arrangements.
Multi-drop or dispersed sites can also benefit when the lorry needs to move between work areas. Tell us which locations are involved and how they relate to each other. We will discuss whether they can be covered within one booking.
Remote or restricted locations
A site further from disposal or supply points may need careful coordination between loading, travel and return. A day booking can be worth discussing if the lorry needs to remain aligned with the site programme rather than attend for one isolated load. Remote locations and travel requirements affect suitability and price, so provide the full site details when enquiring.
A changing programme
Site conditions can shift as excavations progress, access changes or other trades need the same working area. A dedicated lorry may give the team more flexibility to coordinate agreed movements through the working period. The scope still needs to be clear: changes to locations, duties or expected movements should be discussed rather than assumed to be included.
When per-load hire may be the better fit
Per-load hire can work well when you have one or a small number of predictable collections, the material is ready, and the lorry does not need to wait on site. It may also suit work where the loading point and disposal arrangements are straightforward.
The practical question is not only how many loads you expect. Consider how important it is for the lorry to be available as the job proceeds. If the crew can prepare material in advance and schedule a collection without affecting other work, per-load hire may be sufficient. If vehicle availability is part of the work sequence, ask us to compare the options.
How a working day might run
The team agrees the scope and arrival arrangements before the booking. At the start of the planned work, the site contact confirms the loading point, material and sequence with the operator. The lorry then works through the agreed movements, loading with its crane and travelling to the arranged destination for disposal or delivery.
As work progresses, the loading point may change or the crew may need to move to another section. The operator and site contact coordinate those movements within the agreed plan. Near the end of the planned period, they can confirm what has been completed and discuss any work that would need a separate arrangement.
This is an example of how a shift might be coordinated, not a promise of a fixed number of hours, trips or loads. The operating period and any separate charges for disposal, materials, waiting or extra movements must be confirmed before a booking is agreed.

What the site needs to provide
A dedicated vehicle still needs a safe, workable site plan. Give us the site address, access details, planned work areas and expected sequence. It also helps to identify the likely material and give an approximate quantity for each movement. This supports planning; it does not guarantee a particular payload or number of journeys.
Arrange for a responsible person to be available on site to direct the operator, confirm material and coordinate the work. Tell us about ground conditions, slopes, narrow entrances, parked vehicles, overhead cables, trees, drains and any weight restrictions.
As a guide, a grab lorry is approximately 9.5 m long and 2.6 m wide. It is approximately 3.7 m high when empty and may be up to approximately 4.9 m when fully loaded. These dimensions are for planning; access and safe positioning need to be checked for the actual vehicle and site. The driver makes the final safety decision.
Materials and linked services
Standard collections are for suitable inert materials such as soil, topsoil, gravel, bricks, concrete and rubble. Waste is taken to authorised disposal sites. Plasterboard, timber, plastic, general rubbish and green waste are not accepted as part of standard inert collection. Asbestos is never accepted. Tell us what the material is and where it came from before booking.
If the programme also needs aggregate, we can discuss delivery alongside collection. Aggregate orders have a 5-tonne minimum. When delivery and soil collection are arranged for the same agreed visit, there is no additional aggregate transport charge where the delivery fits the visit, subject to capacity and access. Material and collection charges still apply, and extra journeys need separate agreement.
See aggregate delivery and combined delivery-and-collection options.
Day-rate pricing and booking
Day rates are quoted separately. We do not publish a standard day-rate figure because the arrangement depends on the operating period, site requirements, access, travel, disposal and agreed duties.
For context, prices for a typical per-load service start at £220 + VAT. That is a starting floor only: prices can increase based on location, access and disposal. It is not a day-hire price.
Send the site postcode, preferred date, material, access information and a short description of the planned work. Include the locations involved, the likely quantity per movement and whether aggregate delivery is also required. We usually respond to quote requests within one hour during business hours. Same-day or next-day availability may be possible, subject to the schedule, location and site requirements. You can request a free estimate in seconds through our online quote form; a day-rate arrangement is confirmed directly with the team.
Grab Hire Scotland serves Glasgow, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Falkirk and West Lothian. Coverage, access, availability and the final scope are confirmed before a booking is agreed.
If you are weighing day hire against per-load collections, tell us what the site needs. We will discuss the work and the arrangement that fits your programme.
