If you’re comparing skip hire in Glasgow with other ways to clear a site, the first question is often the skip’s size and price. But the total cost also depends on how the waste gets loaded, how long you need the container and whether it can be placed on your property.
For a ready-made pile of loose soil, rubble, concrete or bricks, grab hire may be a more practical option. The lorry’s crane loads the material and takes it away during an agreed visit. For waste that builds up over several days, a skip may be the better fit.
The right choice depends on the material, amount, labour and access.
What are you paying for?
A skip is priced by size, usually described in yards. It is delivered to your site and left there for you to fill. It stays in place whether you fill it quickly or slowly.
If it needs to sit on a public road, a council permit costs extra. In Glasgow, check the council’s skip permit information and allow for any requirements that apply to your location.
Grab hire is a lorry visit, not a container left on site. The driver loads an accessible pile with the crane and removes it. Grab hire prices start at £220 + VAT for a typical full load. That is a starting price, not a price that can be reduced: the cost can only increase, depending on location, access and disposal.
The lorry can carry up to 16 tonnes per full load. The usable load depends on the material, its weight and volume, and safe vehicle limits.

Grab hire vs skip hire: a side-by-side view
What matters
Grab hire
Skip hire
Loading
The crane loads a prepared, reachable pile.
You or your team load the skip.
Labour
Less manual handling for suitable loose material.
Loading usually means shovelling, carrying or using a wheelbarrow.
Time on site
The lorry works during the agreed visit, then leaves.
The skip remains on site for the agreed hire period.
Best suited to
Bulk loads of accepted inert material, such as soil, rubble and concrete.
Waste collected gradually, including some mixed waste, subject to the provider’s terms.
Space
The lorry needs room to park and swing its crane.
The skip needs a suitable place to sit.
Road use
Lorry access and safe working arrangements need checking.
A skip on a public road may require a council permit and extra cost.
Labour can change the comparison
A skip does not load itself. For a homeowner, filling it can take much of a weekend. For a trade team, the same work uses paid hours that could be spent on the next stage of the job.
A grab lorry can reduce that handling when the waste is loose, piled and accessible to the crane. It is not a general site-clearance crew: the material needs to be ready for collection, and excavation or hand-loading is not included.
For a small amount of waste, loading a skip may be manageable. For a substantial pile of inert material, compare the whole job: hire, any permit, time spent loading and how long the skip needs to remain.
Space and access in Glasgow
A skip may be difficult to place where there is no driveway or where street space is limited. If it needs to go on a public road, check permit requirements and any effect on parking or access with the council.
Grab hire avoids leaving a container on site, but the lorry still needs a safe place to stop. It is approximately 9.5 metres long and 2.6 metres wide. Allow for a height of around 3.7 metres when empty and up to 4.9 metres when fully loaded.
Most importantly, the crane needs to reach the waste from where the lorry parks. Tight streets, parked cars, walls, overhead cables, soft ground or restricted entrances may affect whether the job is suitable. Send the postcode, access details and photos so we can assess the site before a booking is agreed.

When a skip is still the right choice
A skip may suit you better if waste will be produced in stages, rather than gathered into one pile. It can also be practical if you have private space for it and want a container available while renovation work continues.
It may be a better fit for mixed waste, too. Grab hire is for accepted inert material such as soil, topsoil, gravel, bricks, concrete and rubble. General rubbish, plasterboard, timber and plastic are not part of our standard inert collection. Tell us what the waste contains so we can confirm whether it is suitable.
No single option is right for every job. A smaller, gradual clear-out and a large, ready-made pile have different requirements.
A quick checklist
A grab lorry may suit your job if:
You have a substantial pile of loose soil, rubble, concrete, bricks or other accepted inert material.
The material can be reached by the crane from a safe lorry position.
You want to avoid manual skip loading and a container taking up space.
The waste is ready for collection during the agreed visit.
A skip may suit your job if:
Waste will accumulate over several days.
You have room for a skip on private land, or have checked road permit requirements.
You are prepared to load it yourself or arrange labour.
The waste type is accepted by the skip provider.
Deliver materials and remove soil together
If your project needs new aggregate as well as soil collection, we may be able to coordinate both on the same agreed visit, subject to access, capacity and the material involved. Aggregate delivery has a 5-tonne minimum.
This can help avoid arranging separate transport for delivery and collection. The aggregate and collection still have their own costs; we will confirm what is practical for your job. See our combined aggregate delivery and soil collection service.
