A garden project can leave you with more than green waste. Digging out a lawn, replacing a driveway or rebuilding a garden wall may create a heavy pile of soil, gravel, bricks or concrete that is awkward to move by hand.
Grab Hire Scotland provides grab hire for suitable inert materials across Glasgow and Central Scotland. The crane loads the agreed material into the lorry, so you do not need to load a skip by hand or leave a skip taking up space in your driveway.
It is important to distinguish this from a general garden waste collection. Our standard grab hire is for accepted inert materials, not a mixed pile of vegetation and household rubbish.
What a grab lorry can take from a garden
A grab lorry can collect suitable material that has been gathered at an agreed, accessible loading point. This can include:
Soil and topsoil
Gravel and stone
Bricks
Concrete and rubble
This makes grab hire a practical option for garden clearance involving excavation, landscaping, a new path or patio, or the removal of old hard landscaping. The crane does the loading, and the collected material is taken to authorised disposal sites.
A full load has capacity of up to 16 tonnes. That is a maximum, not a guarantee that every material or pile will weigh 16 tonnes. The amount collected depends on material density, vehicle limits and safe loading.

What is not included in a standard collection
A garden clearance can produce several different kinds of waste. Our standard inert collection does not accept general rubbish or mixed waste, plasterboard, plastic or timber. Grass cuttings, branches, roots and tree stumps are not part of the standard soil and rubble collection either.
Do not mix these items into a pile of soil or rubble. Tell us what you have before arranging a collection, including anything you are unsure about. We can confirm whether the material is suitable for this service.
Asbestos, hazardous or contaminated waste, chemicals, oils, liquids and gas cylinders must not be included. If you suspect a material is contaminated, tell us before booking and do not add it to a standard load.
A grab lorry is suited to suitable inert material, not every type of garden waste.
For a small amount of green waste or a garden containing mixed items, check that you have a suitable separate disposal option before booking. If your project includes both accepted material and other waste, keep them apart and describe each part when you enquire.
What garden clearance costs
Grab hire prices start at £220 + VAT for a typical load. This is the starting price only. The price can only increase from that floor, depending on factors such as location, access and disposal requirements.
The material, approximate quantity and collection conditions help us assess the job. A clean pile of soil with straightforward access may require a different arrangement from a mixed or difficult-to-reach pile. We confirm the applicable price before a booking is agreed.
You can request a free estimate in seconds on our quote page. An estimate is not a confirmed booking: we still need to check the job details, price, availability and access with you.

Check the vehicle and access
The crane can make loading easier, but the lorry still needs a safe place to stand and enough room to operate. Our vehicles are approximately 9.5 metres long and 2.6 metres wide. Height is approximately 3.7 metres when empty and up to 4.9 metres when fully loaded.
Before you enquire, consider the entrance, turning space, overhead cables, trees, walls, parked cars, slopes, drains and the strength of the ground where the vehicle may need to stand. Do not assume a driveway, lawn or access road can support a heavy lorry.
The crane may be able to reach material over a wall or fence, depending on the site layout, distance, vehicle position and hazards. Send clear photographs and measurements where possible. We will assess the information, and the driver makes the final safety decision on site.
Prepare the material at the agreed collection point, keep excluded waste separate and leave the lorry’s approach clear. Standard collection is for loading prepared material with the grab; excavation, dismantling and hand-loading are not included unless agreed separately.
How fast does garden clearance work?
Same-day or next-day collection may be possible, subject to availability, access and the details of the job. We usually confirm a two-hour arrival window rather than asking you to wait in all day. Traffic, weather, earlier jobs and disposal-site delays can affect timing, so tell us if you have a deadline when you enquire.
The crane loads the prepared pile, which avoids manual skip loading. It also means there is no skip left on your driveway between delivery and collection. The time on site depends on the amount and position of material, safe access and whether the pile matches what was agreed.

Coordinate soil removal with new materials
If your garden project needs fresh aggregate as well as soil removal, ask about arranging both on the same agreed visit. We can coordinate aggregate delivery and collection of suitable excavated material where the quantities, vehicle capacity and access allow.
The minimum aggregate delivery is 5 tonnes. Available materials include Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, whin dust, sands, pipe bedding, 6 mm WP grit and ballast. Material and collection charges still apply. We will confirm the arrangement and price before you agree to it.

What to send with your enquiry
To help us assess your garden clearance, include:
Your postcode and preferred date
The material type and where it came from
An estimate of the pile size or number of loads
Photos of the material and vehicle access
Any restrictions, such as a narrow entrance or overhead cables
We will check the service area, material, access, price and availability with you. An enquiry or online estimate does not reserve a lorry; the booking is confirmed only once the details have been agreed.
We cover Glasgow, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Falkirk and West Lothian. Read more about grab hire or service locations.
Tell us what the garden project has produced. We’ll help confirm whether grab hire is suitable and what needs to be arranged next.
